What is e-ReWater?

e-ReWater tool on tablet
The e-ReWater is an IWMI project that harnesses the power of artificial intelligence and Earth observation data to help governments in the MENA region systematically assess the potential, understand the wastewater supply vs the multi-sectoral demands and plan and prioritize wastewater reuse allocation at scale. Across the region, vast volumes of treated wastewater remain unused - not because the resource is unavailable, but because it is invisible in planning systems. e-ReWater changes that by turning treated wastewater into a planned, prioritized, and usable water resource.

The project combines satellite imagery, AI-derived analytics, and multi-sectoral demand modelling to produce the decision-ready data that governments, planners, and investors need to act.

Funding

The e-ReWater project is generously funded by Google.org, Google's philanthropic arm, which supports innovative, technology-driven solutions to global challenges. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to using data and AI to address one of the world's most pressing resource challenges.

The project timeline is from 2024 to 2026. Over these years, e-ReWater is being implemented across three countries in the MENA region, building national-scale wastewater reuse assessments and embedding data-driven tools into government planning processes.

Applications of the e-ReWater tool.

Applied in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These countries serve as test cases, demonstrating how data-driven reuse planning can be embedded within national water systems and scaled across the region.

Egypt
Arab Water Council (AWC)
Arab Water Council logo

The Arab Water Council is a Cairo-based intergovernmental organization that promotes sustainable water management across the Arab world. As the in-country partner in Egypt, AWC supports national-scale assessments that link wastewater availability to agricultural and environmental demand.

Saudi Arabia
Saudi Irrigation Organization (SIO)
Saudi Irrigation Organization logo

The Saudi Irrigation Organization is the national body responsible for irrigation infrastructure and water reuse policy in Saudi Arabia. SIO works with e-ReWater team to advance strategic prioritization of wastewater reuse investments and strengthen digital analytics in irrigation governance.

United Arab Emirates
TAQA
TAQA logo

TAQA (Abu Dhabi National Energy Company) is one of the largest integrated utilities companies in the EMEA region. In the UAE, TAQA supports the adoption of AI-enabled water planning tools and advances institutional readiness for data-driven wastewater reuse decisions.
